Teaching

Interested in music lessons or workshops? I can help!

Send me an email at ulohdan@gmail.com.

A great music teacher can be the key to unlocking your musical potential. While there’s no substitute for practice/listening, music lessons can pave the way for your musical journey.

Drawing from years of experience as a student, teacher and performing/recording musician, I have lots to share regarding good technique, music theory, practice schedules, jamming, and most importantly, having fun.

Private Lessons

I offer private lessons both in-person and online. I teach all ages and skill levels. During the lesson, we will play through tunes and troubleshoot student difficulties. Afterwards, I follow up with lesson notes and learning materials. Inquire for rates/scheduling.

Online Workshops

I also host an online Monthly Mandolin Workshop. There is no cost to join and we cover a different topic each month. Some past topics have been: D tunes, the Music of Ed and Ella Haley, Cross-picking Mandolin, How to Play with Good Tone. I announce these via Instagram and my email list. Send me an email if you want to join.

Youth Programs

I’ve taught group classes (ages 8-18) through the Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) program in Western North Carolina. This is a great afterschool program that is doing so much for passing along traditional music to the next generation and I’ve been thrilled to be a part of it and teach alongside some of my musical heroes.

I have also taught several times at the Wintergrass Musical Festival Youth Academy (Bellevue, WA).

Workshops

I’ve taught workshops at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, Olympia Old-Time Gathering, and Bellingham Folk Festival. I generally aim to maximize the amount of playing time for participants and make sure they leave with some solid nuggets of wisdom for their own musical journey.
